Knit Night

Years ago, my Great Grandma Emily sat down with me (more than once) to teach me a skill that I had always longed to learn. Since I was a little girl, I often watched my crafty Gram at work. She was always busy sewing clothes for the women in our family (even my dolls and barbies) or knitting sweaters, scarves, hats, socks, and blankets. In her later years, her primary project was knitting blankets for preemie babies in the local hospital and I remember her telling me stories of the days when she would knit socks for the soldiers in war. This was a skill I knew I must learn from her and she was excited to share it with me. After setting me up with all the needed supplies, Gram showed me her techniques and patiently worked with me on knitting my first scarf. I'm not sure why, but after a few lessons my knitting bag ended up tucked away with my scarf sadly unfinished. There it sat for years, as I was too busy in highschool I guess for crafting hobbies:( After a very loooooooong time, I have decided that kitting is a hobby I am still interested in and was inspired by a couple of friends that are experts in the craft. We have been meeting about once a month to make a delicious dinner and knit together. After a quick refresher, the techniques my Gram had shown me all those years ago came back. I have now proudly finished (almost-I may add a little more yarn) my first decent looking scarf/shawl/neck wrap. I am excited to learn even more about the craft, so I can move onto hats, socks, sweaters, and more. Last night, as my three friends and I sat quietly on the couch busily knitting I couldn't help but think of Gram. I hope she was looking down and happy that I was back to crafting. Now my next task is to tackle my sewing machine!

(When I get camera up and going again, I'll post some pics of knit night!)

What is your favorite Craft???

Love your post Shannon - and I sooo enjoyed our delicious and relaxing evening last night :) I also love thinking about crafts/skills being past down from one generation to the next. I hope there will be a resurgence of that otherwise I fear a loss of skills and connections. I'm determined to teach Hillary to knit and sew, though I guess it will only happen when she's ready. Looking forward to our next Knit Night! :) xo,laura

Cute post, Shan! Wish I could have been around to join you gals. And mom...even if your wonderful handwork doesn't get passed on to the next generation, your delicious and healthy recipes sure will. XO - Hillary
